Places of Uncertainty and Memory E-mail
Marion Kahnemann, acclaimed sculptor and Paideia alumna, has inaugurated a major public work in the city of Dresden.

The art project, which consists of three public installations in central Dresden, was inaugurated by the Chief Mayor of Dresden on April 21st, the Yom haShoah. During the last two years, Marion has been provoking an open discussion, in order to raise awareness of the project and the issues it deals with.

In each of three prominent parks in Dresden, Marion has replaced an existing park bench with a glass bench bearing the inscription “LOOK AT IT” (HINSEHEN). These parks represent all the public green spaces that Jews were forbidden from entering beginning in 1940. Next to the bench, a band of text (made of cast iron) is set in the ground with the quote "NUR FÜR ARIER" ("FOR ARYANS ONLY") and with a notice (in German and English) referring to the police directives which applied to each location. (The words "NUR FÜR ARIER" could be read all over Germany during the time of National Socialism.)

Paideia Launches Alumni Think-tank E-mail

By Anneli Rådestad

One of the dark November weekends this year was illuminated by a group of Paideia’s bright alumni, all working as Jewish professionals throughout Europe. An initial number of twelve former Paideia students, today representatives of organizations such as Hillel, Kesher and JAFI with substantial impact on the map of Jewish Europe, gathered in Stockholm to envision the future of European Jewish communities.

In a series of think tank sessions topics such as ”The Nature of Jewish Communities – the Present and the Future,” “Institutional Approaches for Future Directions,” “Pan-European”: Fantasy or Future?” and “Jews in a non-Jewish Europe and non-Jews in Jewish culture,” were discussed with great interest and passion.

This initial think tank meeting was made possible thanks to The Groschinsky Memorial Foundation. It is the first step in Paideia’s intention to solicit the alumni’s opinions on what the most pressing needs are for them and for the sake of Jewish revival in Europe. The Paideia alumni think-tank will also function as an insightful advisor and informant to Paideia on the future directions of the institute.

To truly segment the Paideia think tank initiative, two more conferences are planned for the current academic year – one in Stockholm and one in Berlin.
